Amazing Bicycle!,
I stumbled across the chainless drive while on the hunt for a new bike with disc brakes. I am a city commuter and I got tired of the constant problems with your standard pivot brakes, i.e. one side constantly on the bike rim. The disc brakes have no such problems. I was also sick of the constant drive train maintenance which was messy and time consuming. The chainless drive eliminates all of that. The ride is incredibly smooth and quiet! I find that 8 gears is plenty for my commute, which does include a monster hill. The lowest gear is good enough to tackle that. I feel that the highest gear is more powerful than the highest gear on my old 21-speed mountain bike, but I rarely used it because it was such a chore to get that bike into that gear. No such problems with this beauty! The rapid fire shifter makes shifting a breeze. A handy little side benefit to this system is that you don’t have to be pedalling to change gears. This is handy when I’ve had to make a sudden stop without the chance to gear down. Just change gears while stopped and you’re ready to go without having to fight a higher gear or deal with a derailleur trying to shift 5 gears at once. The maintenance is extremely simple, just a little grease from a grease gun. If you ever do need to adjust the gears, it is as simple as lining up 2 dots. No adjusting 1 gear and having the rest go out of adjustment. After this I’m never going to be able to stand riding a bike with a chain again.

I’ve been a dedicated bicycle commuter for decades, and have owned this bike for about a month now. So this is still an early report, but it is informed by actual city commuting in various conditions. So far, the Dynamic Tempo has been an awesome bike, even better than I had expected.
I bought it because I wanted something with more performance than the typical commuter bike, and I also wanted something low maintenance. This bike is just the ticket. It rides fast and smooth. The performance is great. I am passing just about everybody.
And there is almost no maintenance to do on the entire drive train. You give it a shot of grease in one spot with a grease gun every few months, and that’s it. Dynamic sells the grease gun for $30, but you can get one at Amazon or an auto parts store otherwise.
According to Dynamic, 90% of the typical bicycle’s maintenance is done on the chain. Having ridden a lot, I know that is true. It is especially true, in my experience, with bikes with internally geared hubs as opposed to the usual external gear cassette and derailleur arrangement. The reason is that when the chain stretches over time, the derailleur has a spring which takes up the slack on the chain, at least for a while. So the chain is less likely to jump off, until it is quite stretched. However, the internally geared hub arrangement has no derailleur on the chain to take up the slack. As soon as the chain stretches, it is going to start jumping off the rear sprocket. You have to keep adjusting the wheel axle or the chain to keep the proper tension on it.
That makes the chainless drive a perfect accompaniment to the internally geared hub. There is no chain to stretch. The chainless drive and the internally geared hub are both also entirely sealed and so they are weather, dust, and sand proof.
However, the best part about a chainless drive, I think, is its performance. It rides much smoother and quieter than any chain drive bike I’ve ever ridden. There is a more efficient transfer of power through the drive train. I saw a review on Amazon of another shaft drive bike where the reviewer claimed shaft drive bikes are not as fast as chain drive ones. I am not sure why he thinks that. I can tell you that isn’t my experience with this bike. It goes like great guns.
This bike has the Shimano Alfine 8 gear hub on it which is a high quality hub. It is much better than the Shimano Nexus 8 gear hub, which I had on another bike. That hub had issues with dropping out of gear between 4th and 5th, and it couldn’t be adjusted out of this tendency, and the bike shop said the mechanism was too complex for them to fix. I know of several other users of the the Nexus hub that had the same problem. Maybe Shimano has refined the design since, but if you’re thinking of getting a bike with the Nexus hub I would test drive it carefully first. The Alfine hub on this bike, however, has worked perfectly so far, never dropping out of gear.
For the needs of most commuters, 8 gears are plenty. Still, if you are looking to use a bike for long distance touring, I wouldn’t recommend just 8 gears. You are going to want as many gears as possible for the hills when your bike is heavily loaded with panniers full.
This bike also has dual disc brakes. The bike comes fully adjusted in terms of the brakes, gears, etc., but you have to attach the front wheel, the handlebars, the pedals, and the seat. I also added front and rear fenders, a rack, and a few other options you can order through Dynamic. This all took me about an hour to assemble and start riding. I highly recommend puncture resistant inner tubes for city commuters. Since I’ve been using them for the last 5 years or so, I’ve had almost zero punctures. Prior to them I was getting flats from glass, thorns, and nails, etc, every few weeks. You can order this bike with these tubes already installed.
The frame is stiff and lightweight. The frame is specially modified for the shaft drive and I think the pedal clearance off the ground is a little lower than most bikes.
The bike has a neat dichromatic paint job which looks dark green from one angle, and burgundy from another. Which leads me to my last recommendation: because the bike looks great, make sure you get the best lock for it you can. I have two heavy duty U locks on mine which I leave on the bike rack at work at night so I don’t need to carry them home with me. Do not rely on cable locks, chains, padlocks, etc. They are easy to cut through with bolt cutters.
In summary, this was a purchase I am really pleased with. I think the age of the chainless drive is here. Have fun riding!
